5-Meters 3-Seconds Rule

Coming back to work after a few weeks away, it takes some time to catch up with your work.

The state of projects you were working on before your break, as well as other things that happened while you were away.

How fast you are back up to speed depends in part on how well you are set up. Visual Management, or more specifically, the “5-Meters 3-Seconds Rule” is a great aid to this.

Everyone should be able to read the situation from a 5-meter distance in a period of 3 seconds:

  • What work is happening today?
  • What is the status of each project/order/item?
  • Are we likely to meet our targets?
  • Are there any problems?
  • What is my priority?

Visual Management helps you take immediate action where it matters most.

Visual Management is an important part of Continuous Improvement and Lean, as this immediate overview ensures that any matter is brought to our attention when it arises. Thus, enabling us to intervene before the issue escalates.

This means that less time is spent on firefighting and more time is spent on improving our processes.

Can you see the status of your work in 5-Meters 3-Seconds?
