Buying Intrinsic Motivation totally misses the point

Intrinsic motivation

I loved the irony when I read that Amazon uses paid ‘fulfilment centre ambassadors’ to bolster their brand*. In times of the ‘Great Resignation’ employees of said company and many other firms are being paid for advocacy, including telling others what a great organisation they work for.

Maybe it’s the kiwi b#llsh#t detector that I have acquired during my 30 years in Aotearoa, but the insincerity is dripping off this initiative, which they now have dolefully scrapped. It totally misses the point that only intrinsic motivation creates the level of satisfaction and drive required to be the best in the world, and that payment is an extrinsic motivator.

At Productivity People, we also see the drain of talent as a serious risk to organisations today, and we believe job satisfaction from intrinsic motivation is the greatest weapon against the ‘Great Resignation’. It is a current topic and therefore no coincidence that we are in the midst of publishing our series on using incentives to embed and sustain long-term behaviour change. This is the third instalment. I’ll continue our crusade to put your people at the heart of your productivity journey.

Do you know a business in New Zealand where the principle of intrinsic motivation is front and central to their being? Next week, I’ll share insights from the leaders in this field in New Zealand. A highly successful business that is not chasing the hard business outcomes yet outperforms everyone in the industry. Stay tuned.

Meanwhile I’ll encourage my network, and those outside it, to contribute to this thread. What have you done to create job satisfaction, encourage intrinsic motivation, recognise and reward teams and individuals? Crowd-sourcing your best initiatives. We’d love to hear from you – comment below or direct message me.
